Who Was Marie Curie?

For the first time ever, a woman won a Nobel Prize. Marie Curie was also the first person, whether they were male or female, to win it twice. X-rays were made even better after Pierre Curie died. Marie’s work with Pierre led to the discovery of polonium and radium. It’s thought that the famous scientist died in 1934 of aplastic anemia, which may have been caused by radiation.

Early Life and Education

A woman who became known as Marie Curie was born on November 7, 1867. Maria Sklodowska was born in Warsaw, Poland (modern-day Poland). There were five kids in the family: Zosia, Józef, Bronya, and Hela. Curie was the youngest. She had a math and physics teacher named Wladyslaw as a father. It was when Curie was just 10 years old that her mother died of tuberculosis. Neither Curie nor her sister Bronya had the money to pay for more school. Curie didn’t give up. She came up with a deal with her sister: She would work to help Bronya while she was in school, and Bronya would do the same when she finished school. In 1891, Curie finally made it to Paris and went to school at the Sorbonne. It cost her a lot of money because she didn’t have a lot of money, so she lived on buttered bread and tea. Her health sometimes got worse because of her poor diet. In 1893, Curie got her master’s degree in physics. The next year, she got her math degree.

Discoveries

Curie and her husband Pierre discovered radioactivity while working with the mineral pitchblende. They also discovered the radioactive elements polonium and radium while working with the mineral. She also pushed for the development of X-rays after Pierre died.

Radioactivity, Polonium, and Radium

Curie was interested in the work of Henri Becquerel, a French physicist who found that uranium emits rays that are weaker than the X-rays found by Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen. Curie took his work a few steps further. Curie did her own research on uranium rays and found that they were always the same, no matter how the uranium looked. The rays, she thought, came from the element’s atomic structure, which made them. This new idea led to the field of atomic physics. Curie came up with the term “radioactivity” on her own to describe what was going on.

Curie and her husband Pierre kept working on their research after she found out about radioactivity, and they did it together. In 1898, the two worked with the mineral pitchblende to find a new radioactive element. Polonium was named after Curie’s home country of Poland. This isn’t the only type of radioactive material found in pitchblende. They also found radium. In 1902, the Curies said that they had made a decigram of pure radium, which proved that it was a unique chemical element.

Development of X-rays

During World War I, Curie gave her time and money to help. She pushed for the use of portable X-ray machines in the field, and these medical vehicles became known as “Little Curies” because of their small size. After the war, Curie used her fame to help her research. To buy radium and build a radium research institute in Warsaw, she went to the United States twice: in 1921 and 1929, both times to raise money for the projects.

Nobel Prizes

In 1903, she won the physics Nobel Prize.. In 1911, she won the Nobel Prize in chemistry. She was the first woman to win a Nobel Prize, as well as the first person to win the prize twice. She is still the only person who has been recognized for her work in two different fields.
