What is a Bechdel Test?

A Bechdel test is basically a test that asks the viewers if two female characters are talking to each other about an issue other than a man. This test was introduced by Alison Bechdel in 1985, and since then, people have been using it to examine the role of female characters portrayed in the Hollywood film industry.

The main purpose of creating this test was a way to exhibit how Hollywood has a bad habit of portraying talented women in a sexist and stereotypical sense.

How the test works:

The Bechdel Test is used as a fine measure to show the representation of female characters in the Hollywood Film industry. It depicts whether two female characters have a conversation about something other than males.

It includes three steps

  1. The first step is that there must be two female characters that have names.
  2. Secondly, they must talk about something other than men with each other.
  3. Lastly, the conversation between those two females needs to be more than five words.
