Margaret Thatcher, the first female prime minister of the United Kingdom, was in office from 1979 to 1990, when she was in office. It was a lot like U.S. President Ronald Reagan, a friend and ideological ally of hers, who did a lot of the same things during her time in office. She was called the “Iron Lady” because she was against Soviet communism and fought a war to keep the Falkland Islands. Thatcher was the longest-serving British prime minister of the 20th century, but she was eventually forced to step down by members of her own Conservative Party.

Margaret Thatcher: Childhood and Education

In a small town in England called Grantham, Margaret Hilda Roberts was born on October 13, 1925, and later became Margaret Thatcher. She was born in Grantham. They were middle-class shopkeepers and very religious Methodists. Alfred was also a politician. He served on the town council for 16 years before becoming an alderman in 1943 and mayor of the city of Grantham from 1945 to 1946. Thatcher went to Oxford University in 1943, at the height of World War II, to study. During her time at Oxford, she studied chemistry and joined the Oxford Union Conservative Association. In 1946, she became president of the group.

Margaret Thatcher Enters Parliament

Margaret married Denis Thatcher, a well-known businessman, in December 1951, and they had a daughter together. Before Carol and Mark were born in less than two years, she gave birth to them as twins. Then, in early 1954, she passed the bar exams. For the next few years, she practiced law and looked for a group of people she could win over. At the end of 1961, Thatcher had agreed to be an undersecretary in the Ministry of Pensions and National Insurance. This job would have been hers. When the Conservatives took power again in 1970, she rose through the ranks of the government and became secretary of state for education and science. G With the Conservatives in opposition in 1975, she defeated former Prime Minister Edward Heath to become the leader of the party. She was able to keep her job even though she lost.

Margaret Thatcher Becomes First Female Prime Minister

Thatcher was now one of the most powerful women in the world, making her even more powerful than before. She didn’t like John Maynard Keynes’ economic ideas. Instead, she preferred the monetarist approach of Chicago economist Milton Friedman, who advocated cutting back on government spending when unemployment was high. Soon after, she said that the Soviet Union was “bent on world power.” A Soviet army newspaper called her “the Iron Lady,” which she quickly adopted.

In 1979, the Conservatives won the election thanks to a “winter of discontent” in which many unions went on strike. Thatcher became prime minister because of this. Even though inflation and unemployment rose, Thatcher’s popularity didn’t go away for a while. During her first term, the government cut taxes on direct income and increased taxes on spending, sold off public housing, put in austerity measures, and made other changes.

Margaret Thatcher’s Fall From Power and Death

People paid less income tax under Thatcher’s government after she was re-elected in 1987. Income tax rates had not been this low since the Second World War. A “community charge” that many people didn’t like was also passed. There were protests on the streets and a lot of people didn’t pay for it. Thatcher won the first vote, but not by enough to win the whole thing. That night, each of her cabinet members came to her one by one and asked her to resign, and she agreed to do so. Finally, on November 28, she made it official that John Major and not Heseltine would be in charge.

Thatcher was in parliament until 1992, when she moved to the House of Lords, which is mostly ceremonial, and began writing her memoirs. Though she stopped going out in public after having a series of small strokes in the early 2000s, her influence was still very strong. Her political rise and fall were shown in an award-winning biopic film called “The Iron Lady” which was also very controversial. She died on April 8, 2013.
