Early Life Of Mahatma Gandhi

In 1869, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born in the Indian state of Gujarat. He was born on October 2, 1869. Dewan: His father was the dewan (chief minister) of Porbandar. His religious mother was a follower of Vaishnavism, which worships the Hindu god Vishnu, and was also influenced by Jainism, which is an ascetic religion with rules about self-discipline and nonviolence.

He left home at the age of 19 to study law in London at the Inner Temple, one of the city’s four law schools, where he would stay for two years. When he came back to India in the middle of 1891, he opened a law office in Bombay, but it didn’t work out well. The Indian company soon hired him and sent him to work in South Africa. As well as his wife and children, Gandhi stayed in South Africa for about 20 years.

Leader of a Movement

Gandhi talked about how important it was for India to be able to run its own economy as part of his campaign for home rule. He wanted to make khaddar, or home-made cloth, instead of buying textiles from Britain. Those who followed Gandhi admired him because of how well he spoke and because he lived an ascetic lifestyle based on prayer, fasting, and meditation. They called him Mahatma, which means “the great-souled one.”

Gandhi was given all of the power of the Indian National Congress (also known as the Congress Party), and he used it to turn the independence movement into a huge group. He led boycotts of British manufacturers and institutions that show how much the British had an impact on India, such as legislatures and schools.

A Divided Movement

Gandhi announced in 1934 that he was giving up politics and the Congress Party so that he could spend more time working with people in rural areas. When World War II broke out, Gandhi was dragged back into politics again. He again led the Indian National Congress, demanding that the British leave India in exchange for Indian help in the war. Instead, British forces arrested the entire leadership of the Congress. This brought the relationship between the two countries to a new low.

Partition and Death of Gandhi

Gandhi told Hindus and Muslims to live peacefully together in the midst of the huge riots that happened after Partition. He went on a hunger strike until the riots in Calcutta stopped. This time, Gandhi went on a hunger strike in January 1948, this time in the city of Delhi. He wanted to make the city more peaceful. A Hindu fanatic named Nathuram Godse shot Gandhi to death in Delhi on January 30, 12 days after Gandhi ended his fast. Gandhi was going to an evening prayer meeting when Godse killed him. Next, Gandhi’s body was taken through the city and cremated on the banks of a river that is very holy. The next day, about 1 million people came to see the procession.
